Message that cannot be detected with typical fuel pressure gauge or regulator could cause lean or rich combustion events. In my opinion, these could cause short or long term damage due to knock. If these fluxuations were slow enough for your gauge to detect, then the fuel pressure regulator would likely smooth them out. If Nissan thought your fuel pressure regulator could smooth them out, they would not have spent the money to install the damper.
